BefriendER - Babs and Betty

Babs and BettyBabs was introduced to Betty in May 2009.

Betty had recently moved into supported accomodation - a stressful experience - after living in her home for many years.

Both ladies hit it off right away, and realised that they had a lot in common.

They meet up once a week for coffee, or go on outings to museums, gardens, or other places of interest. Babs also helps with shopping.

It was very fortunate for me that Babs was available just when I needed her and she's made a big difference. Some days I have nobody and I need people. I can get terribly low and unhappy. I'm just so pleased to have Babs coming.

Because of a hearing impairment, Betty has difficulty socialising in groups due to the background noise, so having a one-to-one Befriender allows her to express herself and her feelings:

Babs gives me an opportunity to have a conversation outside of the normal circle I'm in. Just having Babs with me makes all the difference. We are friends now more than anything else. BefriendER's a very, very good thing.

Betty is a lovely person, and is happy just to sit and talk. It's nice to be able to enjoy company. This match has gone really well.
