First Step Project - Annette Gregory

Having been unemployed for a year, Annette was referred to the First Step Employability Project by her Jobcentre Advisor.  When Annette was referred to the project she was feeling quite despondent and isolated, as she had previously been working full time and was used to leading a busy active life.

Annette’s background was primarily in retail but she felt that she wanted to do something different, as the retail job she had previously placed a lot of pressure on her, which had a detrimental effect on her health and wellbeing.  Annette felt that because she was in her fifties, her choice of employment would be limited.

Through the First Step Project Annette began volunteering as a receptionist at underCOVER in Barrhead, which she enjoys immensely.

Annette has gained new skills in this role such as dealing with incoming call, using the computer, and calendar management.  Annette now feels more confident and is much more competent when using the computer.

Annette also enjoys the camaraderie of the staff and users at underCOVER, and looks forward to coming in to volunteer.

Annette remarks

"The First Step Project has completely changed my life.  I would say that within myself, I have found new self-esteem and happiness.  This is the best thing that has happened to me in a long time."

Annette is now considering applying to do her European Driving Learning License (ECDL) course, is about to start some sessional work with Voluntary Action and has also volunteered to participate on a marketing group.
